A pair of Jerry Garcia tributes put together by Blackbird Presents dubbed Dear Jerry: Let’s Play 2 began with the Jerry Uncovered event at D.A.R. Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C. on Friday night. The evening saw Alison Krauss, Warren Haynes, Jamey Johnson, John Medeski, Don Was and Raymond Weber come together for a selection of classics from the Jerry Garcia Band electric and acoustic repertoires.
The evening started with Krauss leading the band on “The Way You Do The Things You Do” before Johnson stepped into the spotlight for “Long Black Veil.” Warren had his first turn up front for “He Ain’t Give You None,” ahead of a Krauss fronted “Peggy-O” and Johnson leading the traditional “Ragged But Right.” Haynes came back into the spotlight on “Stop That Train,” while “Blue Yodel No. 9” turned into a duet between Alison and Jamey. The set came to a close with Jamey Johnson putting his heart and soul into “Sing Me Back Home” and Warren leading “(I’m A) Road Runner.”
Warren, Alison and Jamey continued to trade off turns fronting the talented ensemble in the second set. Haynes time up front included “That’s What Love Will Make You Do,” “Tough Mama,” “After Midnight” and “Don’t Let Go,” while Krauss was in the spotlight for “I’ll Take A Melody” and “Midnight Moonlight.” Johnson led the group on “Georgia On My Mind,” “Mama Tried” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” The evening came to a close with a tender “To Lay Me Down” and raucous “Not Fade Away” as the encores.
