Hi. Howdy.
I am a super baby Alison fan. The first time I heard of her was on Monday June 6...yes, I know, pitiful...but I dont listen tomuch any bluegrass (except for akus).
Anyway, I bought two tickets to the June 24 austin concert online on that very day, actually just after hearing about her. It was a snap decision that I will never regret.
I bought two tickets because I have just begun dating again three years after my divorce--and the 24 JUNE Alison Krauss and Union Station concert was my first date ;D
I will write about my date in the concert review section, I guess.
But here is how I heard about AKUS. It is a bit strange and long-winded.
A colleague of mine at work noticed my ever-present Corrs photo at my work station. (The Corrs are a very popular pop band from Ireland--three sisters and a brother.) I had seen the Corrs last summer in concert, flying from Texas to Baltimore to see them in Virginia. It was fantastic, but not as fantastic as seeing AKUS.
So, my colleague mentions that some female performer (he couldnt remember her name at first ) was coming to the backyard in austin. He also described how one fellow in her band sets some instrument face up and picks and strums away at it.
Well, I wasnt too impressed, until later he came back and said it was Alison Krauss and that she had a beautiful voice. Now, I had been listening to a lot of new music lately over yahoo launchcast, and I could have sworn I had heard a couple of AK songs, but now I doubt it.
Anyway, I read a bit about AK+US on yahoo and decided right then and there to buy two tickets. I have gotten to know some women through my church's singles group, and I said, by golly, by gee, I am gonna get two tickets and ask one of these fine ladies out.
And I did, that very night. And it was my first choice. I was so happy that she said yes. And although she paid me back for her ticket and didnt treat it as a date, still it was a date to me, as we had only known each other seven weeks and knew very little about each other. (OK, so I digress.)
Since I had 18 days until the concert, I decided I wanted to get some CDs and listen to them. I went to one store and they had none.
Then I went to Best Buy and they had at least eight. Still, as a newbie, it was hard to decide what to buy. I decided to stay away from the older stuff. I ended up getting LRBW (since it was the latest), NF (since yahoo had said it was a best seller, and also FAI (since I thought I would like to hear AK more solo).
So I come home and put NF on, and although I liked the songs Alison sand, I did not like that bluegrass stuff performed by US.
Well, I kept listening and the grass grew on me, you might say, in a good way. Then I ordered the AK+US Live CD and really enjoyed it.
Now it is funny because I was playing some of the music to my three kids when one of them blurted out: "Is this OBWAT?" And I yelled: Yes!!! Then I put on "Man of constant sorrow" and they said it was the main song of the movie (I hadnt seen the movie, but they had.) Then I told them that I doubted that the actor in the movie had actually sung the song but that someone sang it for him. One of my boys said, Well that is a jip.
But we rented the movie the next day and I immediately liked it and then I told them that it was DT singing for GC in the movie.
Anyway, the next part of this is the "date" to the concert, so I should stop now and go to the concert review section.
But it is late, so it will have to wait till tomorrow.
