Teens tend to follow the crowd when picking tunes

Eminem, Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Neil Young, Linkin Park, Good Charlotte, American Idiot and Alison Krauss seem to be some of the most listened to music among teens.
Although not all teens list these names as favorites, these artists are some of the best selling out on the market right now.
How did these artists make it on the top lists among teens?
There could be many reason why these artists are making the popular music including, talent, good beat, catchy lyrics and looks.
But is this the true reason that teens are listing to the music?
According to Tim Cretsinger at Groovacious, he feels that above all the other factors one reason certain artists or songs are popular is greatly due to what the major labels are pushing on the radio. "Just because it's on the radio doesn't mean it's the best music," he said.
However, above labels pushing certain songs, the number one reason Cretsinger feels the top artists are popular is due to peer pressure. Not only do teens tend to listen to the same music their friends do, but many teens tend to like whatever is playing on the radio or on TV. Generally speaking, teens go with the flow and never look outside the book. They like what they hear, so why venture out?
Another reason teens listen to the music they do may be for another reason other than actually enjoying what you listen to.
Whitney Whitfield, a senior at Canyon View High School said, "I started listening to the music to annoy my brother and to be different." If it weren't for that reason, she may not be listening to what she does.
But don't forget about the teens that listen to music because they love and enjoy listening to it. For many teens, no matter the style, music is a source of comfort, enjoyment, entertainment and just plain fun.
If you find yourself stuck in a rut, run on over to the nearest music store like Groovacious in Cedar City or CD Warehouse and Eden Music in St. George. As for Groovacious, they carry almost every style of music, but if you are a little skeptical of what might be "good music" or something you might enjoy, Cretsinger will be willing to help guide you to some good albums.
