Greg Allman wrote this song (One of his roadies, who is credited as co-writer, only contributed one line "The road goes on forever").
Your best bet for finding discussions of possible meanings would be websites for the Allman Brothers Band.
That would not be ground I am familiar with, but I do know that the band had a tragic history - I think two members died in motor-bike accidents, and Greg Allman had a traumatic time when he had to testify against a colleague who was given a very long prison sentence on narcotics charges.
My guess (no more than that) would be that the song reflects the loneliness of someone perceived as a rebel, caught in a cycle of almost endless touring, which had already been instrumental in the loss of friends
