I have 2 guitars, an Epiphone, "Pepper" and a Martin DR, "Martina" (not too original, I know ) I've been playing for over 10 years. The influence I can remember the earliest was James Taylor and Ron Block, and the rhythym player at my church, Bob Brown, who I swear could make play in any group in Nashville. He sites both artists as major influences also. When he taught me for a few months, he gave me a tape of songs that Ron plays on and showed me some of the technique that he uses and used a few early Alison songs, "Jesus, Help me to Stand" and "Looking In the Eyes of Love" to learn. Since then, Sean Watkins is also a major influence.

Well, I hesitate to say that I actually "play" the fiddle or mandolin, but I own one of each and like to tinker around with them. I actually did take fiddle lessons for a while a couple years ago, but I had so much going on that I didn't really have the time or energy for it. I was inspired to play fiddle by Alison, Martie Seidel (well, now she's Martie Maguire, but at the time it was Seidel...) of the Dixie Chicks, and Natalie MacMaster and kept saying I wanted to play, so one day my dad bought me a fiddle at a second-hand music store. Just an old piece of Czechoslovakian junk, but I like her. And her name is Allie. Yes, after Alison. My mandolin is a Johnson MF-370 that I got for Christmas in 2003. Can't seem to come up with a name that fits it though. I've played around with a few names, but none seem quite right. Oh, and my dad let me have one of his guitars (I liked it because it was pretty, lol) and I named it Eden (after a Pat Green song) but the action was too high and it just generally sounded crappy and I didn't like it so I gave it back. Never could figure guitar out anyways....

I play alot of different instruments.I play fiddle, mandolin, banjo, piano, bass, and acoustic guitar.I love to play fiddle the most.I compete in local, state, and national competitions in the U.S.I have won alot of competitions and have been doing this since I was 5.It has been so much fun and I never want to quit! The names..my fiddle is named bamagrass because I was having to figure out a name for a competition because me and some of my family and friends were in a little band for that one and they wanted me to figure out a name.Well we all came from Alabama and played bluegrass. So I was like Bamagrass!!Well we won the competition and I just named my fiddle Bamagrass.I don't have a mandolin But I want one soon.I think I am going to name is Dan after Dan Tyminski.hehe!I love him!hehe! For the banjo I have named it Jake after my cousin who sat me down at the age of 6 and taught me how to rip that thing up.My guitar is named Salley after the song "Salley Johnson" that I played so many times on that thing that I could play if backwards. It's a good song!I love it still! My piano I play on but not as much as I do my fiddle and other things.I use it more for tuning and picking out melodies.Very useful. But my mom is a classical pianist so she plays it almost everyday. My upright bass I call Mike after my dad who taught me how to play about 2 years ago. Well that is it! -Dustin

I'm like fiddlechick and hesitate to call myself a musician by any means, but I've been trying to get something musical from my fiddle since November of 04. I come from a very musical family. My dad plays anything he wants to and is self-taught. He tried to teach me the guitar as a child, but it's dang hard! I wish so badly now that I would've done it, but at the time it hurt my fingers too bad. In fact, it hurts my fingers too bad now lol. But his daddy was a champion fiddle player and he died very unexpectedly while my mom was pregnant with me so I've always wanted to learn the fiddle in honor of him. Unfortunately I waited until after becoming a mom to try so I never have time to devote to it. I had to quit my lessons because of that. Right now it's more of an aggravation to me because I want to do better than I can. Other than that, my dad is going to start teaching me some things on the bass. We're in a band together and one of our guitarists quit. We still have another one so no big deal, but my dad plays bass for the majority of our shows and there are a couple where he plays the dobro (just bought the thing two months ago and is already playing it like a wild man) and so I need to learn some bass to step in for him. I'm looking forward to that. He has a big upright, but because of some health problems he's just been using a neck-through bass that is much easier to lug around. BTW, I'm the singer in the band.

I'm playing the bass(guitar) now for 3 years.
My dad plays the banjo and he influenced me to play bluegrass.

I came up with a name for the mandolin...Dan the Man. You know, Dan like Dan Tyminski and Man, short for mandolin. Heh. I think it's hysterical, but maybe that's just me. I'm easily amused... I picked out my next instrument. (I know, because I need a new one before I figure out what I have...) Dobro! A Regal RD-52 "Black Lightning" square neck. Be-yootiful. Now I just need $600, if anyone feels generous...

fiddlechick, that's a hilarious name! Good job! Anyhow, I just wanted to pass along some info to you about a dobro. My dad recently bought one so he could learn how to play. It came from musiciansfriend.com and was like $150. He was absolutely blown away with it! Also, a guy in our band who is a dobro player and has some really expensive kinds and has been playing probably longer than I've been living says that Dad's dobro sounds better than a lot of $600-$700 dobros. It's a pretty nice-looking little guitar, too. Very loud. Anyhow, I thought I'd pass that on because my dad's a very good musician and I know he doesn't settle for anything less than the best when it comes to his toys and gadgets. If you're interested I can get the actual make and everything off of him.

Sure, find out what it is and I'll check it out! The store I went to didn't have a huge selection of dobros. The one I'm probably getting was the second cheapest they had...the other was another Regal model, I think an RD-45 or something like that, and it was $399.99. I was actually gonna get that til the store owner played the Black Lightning. It sounds so sweet, and the store owner said it has a Quarterman cone, which is also used in the Gibson Jerry Douglas signature model dobro. He said it's the only production model that uses it besides the JD model, otherwise it's pretty much used for custom instruments. Now, I don't know about all that because I know squat about dobros, but it sounded so good.

Our dobro player has a Jerry Douglas model that he plays throughout the majority of our shows. I'll get that info off of Dad and pass it along to you. I may even be able to find a song he has recorded and used it in if you'd like a sample of its sound. My dad's been playing music since he was 14 and I can guarantee you that if he says it's good, it's good. He's very spoiled and if that dobro wasn't up to par then he'd already be in the market for another one. He only got that one because he figured he'd start out cheap and then after learning how to play it he'd get a better one, but he's so impressed with this one he said he's not even going to worry about getting another one. This from a man that literally has about $15,000. worth of instruments hanging on his wall right now...except for his upright bass which he props against the wall lol. He's got acoustic, acoustic electric, electric, classical, resonators, about ten different varieties of basses, a mandolin, a banjo, a steel, a lap steel, a dulcimer (sp?), a fiddle, a harmonica, a keyboard, the dobro, of course...you get the point. He can actually probably tell you a lot about it in the other board that y'all both go to. He's been singing its praises since he got it. Again, his name is Cathead. Ask him about it and I'm sure he'll tell you all about it.

As you can tell by my avatar I play the mandolin, but my main instrument is a Scott Cao Violin. It is 3 years old and it is my "baby". I also own a mandolin, which I kind of can play. Learning more everyday. And I can play a couple of things on the guitar. Oh yeah and piano. Not much else though. I would love to learn how to play the banjo or bass.

I play piano. I want to start taking guitar lessons though, as we are trying to start a band and we need a second guitar.

I hate to call it 'playing', so I started taking violin lessons a few years ago. My teacher ended up going to college a not too long after I started. I kind of got away from it for a little while, but I've been trying to pick it back up again. I also got a guitar a few months ago, and hope to take lessons sometime soon. I hope it all goes ok! But once I really set my mind to something, I'll get it all figured out. Ohh, and I don't have a name for either of mine. lol! Never really considered it before.
